Yasushi Yamachika | Kutani Ceramic Artist

Yasushi Yamachika (山近泰)

Born in Terai, Ishikawa Prefecture, in 1975, Yasushi Yamachika grew up surrounded by the ceramic traditions of his family's Kutani workshop. After graduating from the practical course of the Ishikawa Prefectural Kutani Ceramics Training Institute in 2000, he developed an unmistakably contemporary artistic language rooted in Kutani's celebrated five-color palette.

Expressive Forms and Vivid Painting

Yamachika personally undertakes the full process of his individual art pieces, from shaping the ceramic body to painting its surface. He often forms vessels using slab-building techniques before bringing animals and birds to life with rhythmic lines and colors mixed to his own specifications. His imaginative paintings combine movement, character, and the deep heritage of Kutani overglaze decoration.

Awards and Museum Recognition

Yamachika received the Encouragement Award at the Ishikawa Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 2006, Grand Prizes at the Traditional Kutani Ware Craft Exhibition in 2012 and 2020, and an Excellence Award in 2017. His work entered the collection of the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art in 2012. He is a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association and has exhibited in Japan and internationally.

Taishi Kiln (大志窯)

Yamachika founded Taishi Kiln in 2011, continuing his family's ceramic heritage while developing an accessible range of contemporary Kutani ware. The studio produces colorful tableware and decorative pieces for everyday living alongside Yamachika's individual artistic practice.
