Yohei Konishi (小西 洋平)
Born in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, in 1941, Yohei Konishi is an acclaimed ceramic artist whose inventive kyusu teapots extend the possibilities of traditional Tokoname craftsmanship. He graduated from the ceramics department of Tokoname High School in 1959 and became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1981.
A Recognized Master of Teapot Making
In 2008, Tokoname City designated Konishi a holder of an Intangible Cultural Property for his hand-thrown kyusu technique. The city recognizes his distinctive nerikomi cut method, which draws new decorative possibilities from layered clay while remaining rooted in classical ceramics.
Innovation Within Tradition
Konishi approaches the teapot as both a finely engineered tool for brewing tea and an expressive ceramic artwork. His practice explores form, texture, and the characteristics of Tokoname clay, demonstrating how tradition can continue to evolve through individual craftsmanship.
