Premium Japanese Incense & Scented Candles
Japan has one of the world's oldest and most refined incense cultures. Kodo (香道) — the Japanese "way of fragrance" — developed alongside chado tea ceremony and kado flower arrangement as one of the three classical arts of refinement practiced by the Japanese aristocracy from the Heian period onward. To "listen to incense" — the traditional phrase used in kodo, where mon-ko (聞香) means both to smell and to listen — is to approach fragrance as a meditative, sensory art rather than simply a pleasant smell.
Traditional Japanese incense — koh (香) — is made from natural ingredients including agarwood (jinko), sandalwood (byakudan), clove, cinnamon, and camphor, ground and blended according to recipes that have been passed down within incense-making families for generations. The most respected incense makers, including Nippon Kodo and Shoyeido, have been producing koh in Kyoto and Tokyo for over four hundred years.
At Great Zakka, our incense collection includes hand-rolled stick incense (senko) and coil incense (uzumaki-senko) from established Japanese makers, as well as ceramic and ash incense holders (koh-tate and koh-ro) designed to complement the ritual of burning incense. Many pieces pair a small ceramic tray or dish with an incense stick rest — functional objects that are also quietly beautiful on a desk or shelf.
Our candle selection features washi paper candles and soy wax candles crafted in Japan with subtle Japanese fragrance profiles — hinoki cypress, green tea, yuzu, and white plum — that bring a distinctly Japanese atmosphere to any room.
These make thoughtful gifts for anyone who values mindfulness, quiet rituals, or Japanese home aesthetics. All pieces are made in Japan and ship from our US warehouse.
