The Art of the Maneki-Neko

The maneki-neko (招き猫), literally “beckoning cat,” is one of Japan’s most recognizable and beloved folk-art figures. With one paw raised in a welcoming gesture, these charming cats are often seen at the entrances of shops, restaurants, and homes throughout Japan.

Different paw positions and colors give each piece its own character. A raised right paw is traditionally associated with welcoming business, while a raised left paw is often seen as inviting people and visitors. Some designs feature both paws raised for an especially playful look.

Maneki-neko also come in a wide range of traditional colors and finishes, from classic white and calico patterns to elegant gold, black, and red designs. These variations highlight the creativity and decorative traditions of Japanese ceramic art.

At Great Zakka, our collection includes classic ceramic maneki-neko as well as detailed hand-painted Kutani porcelain pieces known for their vivid colors and fine craftsmanship. Many are made in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan’s historic centers of ceramic production.
