Chopsticks & Chopstick Rests

Chopsticks — called hashi (箸) in Japanese — are far more than simple eating utensils. In Japanese culture, they are treated with great care and respect, governed by their own etiquette, and often given as meaningful gifts to mark new beginnings such as weddings, housewarmings, and New Year celebrations.

Japanese chopsticks are distinct from their Chinese and Korean counterparts. They are typically longer and more tapered at the tip, designed for precision when eating delicate foods such as sushi, sashimi, and nimono simmered dishes. This fine taper requires exceptional craftsmanship and is one of the defining features of authentic Japanese hashi.

Our collection features chopsticks crafted from a range of traditional materials. Lacquered chopsticks, known as nuribashi (塗り箸), are made in regions like Wakasa in Fukui Prefecture and Wajima in Ishikawa, both famous for their urushi lacquerware traditions. Natural wood and bamboo chopsticks highlight organic grain patterns and offer a warm, tactile quality that feels grounded and honest.

Many pieces in our collection come in sets of two or five pairs — five being the traditional number in Japanese tableware culture — making them ideal for gifting as a complete set. Paired with a ceramic chopstick rest (hashioki), they become a refined table setting that reflects genuine Japanese aesthetic sensibility.

All chopsticks in this collection are made in Japan. They ship from our US warehouse, with in-store pickup available in Great Neck, NY.
