Lucky Cat

Lucky Cat

The maneki-neko (招き猫) — literally "beckoning cat" — is one of Japan's most recognizable and beloved good luck symbols. With one paw raised in a gentle wave, the maneki-neko is believed to invite good fortune, prosperity, and happiness into homes and businesses. You will find them at the entrance of restaurants, shops, and homes across Japan, quietly beckoning good things inside.

The raised paw carries specific meaning. A cat raising its right paw is said to attract money and financial luck, while a cat raising its left paw is believed to invite customers, visitors, and good relationships. Many maneki-neko raise both paws — welcoming all good fortune at once, though some traditional interpretations suggest that both paws raised signals the cat is asking for help rather than offering it.

The colors of the maneki-neko also carry meaning rooted in Japanese folk tradition. The classic white cat with calico markings symbolizes overall good luck. A gold cat attracts wealth and prosperity. Black cats ward off evil and bring safety, while red cats are associated with good health.

At Great Zakka, our lucky cat collection includes pieces ranging from classic ceramic maneki-neko in traditional white and gold glazes to elaborate hand-painted Kutani porcelain figures with the region's signature vivid colors and fine detail work. Many are made in Seto (瀬戸), in Aichi Prefecture — one of Japan's oldest pottery cities and the historic center of maneki-neko production.

These make wonderful gifts for new business openings, housewarmings, the Lunar New Year, or anyone who appreciates Japanese folk art and ceramic craft. All pieces are made in Japan and ship from our US warehouse.
