Fourth-Generation Yamada Jozan 四代 山田常山

Born in 1954 in Tokoname, Yamada Jozan is the fourth-generation master of a renowned tea utensil-making family. His father, the third-generation Yamada Jozan, was a Living National Treasure. The younger Jozan learned his craft by observing his father rather than direct instruction.

He views his creations as artistic pieces that blend beauty and functionality. His father believed that pursuing usability leads naturally to beauty, a principle Jozan follows in his work.

Despite challenges in sourcing high-quality clay due to development in Tokoname, Jozan continues to produce exceptional pieces, thanks to a stockpile of fine clay accumulated by his predecessor. His work includes tea utensils, tableware, and flower vases, all highly regarded, particularly by top restaurants in Japan.

Biography:

• 1954: Born in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture (real name Yamada Emu). His father was the third-generation Yamada Jozan (a Living National Treasure).
• 1980: Received the Choshin Prize at the Mino Ceramic Art Exhibition.
• 1982: First selected for the Nihon Dentou Kogeiten (Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition).
• 1984: Held a solo exhibition at the Nagoya Meitetsu Department Store, continuing annually.
• 1986: Father-son exhibition at Ginza Wako, Tokyo.
• 1995: Held a solo exhibition at Gallery Yufuku (Aoyama, Tokyo), continuing biennially.
• 1999: Featured on NHK’s "Yakimono Tanpo" (Short Feature on Ceramics).
• 2000: Featured on NHK’s "Shumi Yuyu" (Hobby and Leisure).
• 2006: Assumed the title of fourth-generation Yamada Jozan; held a commemoration exhibition at Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi Main Store.
