Hagi ware, also known as Hagi yaki in Japanese, is a type of porcelain primarily produced in the city of Hagi, located in Yamaguchi prefecture. It is characterized by its simple and unadorned aesthetic, allowing the natural qualities of the clay to shine. This simplicity gives rise to a unique texture, where each piece of Hagi ware possesses its own distinct features. The clay used in Hagi ware undergoes a firing process that causes deep cracks to form, resulting in variations and color changes on the surface of the pottery known as "the seven disguises" (nanabake). These unpredictable transformations during firing contribute to the charm of Hagi ware.
