Kaneko Kohyo has been firing ceramics in Toki, Gifu Prefecture since 1921 — and the Rinka is the piece that carried them beyond Japan. The Rinka plate is a modern classic of Japanese ceramics.
The name means "flower ring." Look at it straight on and you understand why: the rim rises and falls in soft scallops, like petals caught mid-bloom. It's a shape that does something unusual for a plate — it makes whatever you put on it look considered. A piece of fruit, a slice of cake, a tangle of soba. All of it sits better here.
The glaze is off-white, slightly matte, with the faint irregularities that come from being shaped by hand. No two pieces are identical. That's not a flaw — it's the point.
Made from Mino ware porcelain, a ceramic tradition rooted in the Toki region for over 1,300 years. Kaneko Kohyo takes that history and makes it work on a Tuesday night.
